If you find yourself in the Grassmarket district of Edinburgh, treat yourself to a delicious meal at Mamma’s Pizza. Ignore the miserable faces of the patrons in the window seats (probably the main reason why passers by keep passing on by!) and enjoy a delicious pizza. You won’t be disappointed!

The choice of toppings is incredible although I have to really stretch my imagination to figure out what a banana pizza would taste like. Mind you, that said, I’m all for choice and variety but I strongly believe certain toppings have no right to be on a pizza. Certain pizza toppings on their own (and not on a tomato sauce covered with grated cheese) I like. The toppings in question are the following;- chicken; chocolate; apple; baked beans; pineapple and banana. One item from Mamma’s pizza toppings menu that I wouldn’t eat EVEN if a big dollop of clotted cream and strawberry jam were added, would be that old favourite, cactus! Yes, you read correctly, Cactus! I have to ask myself, is the world ready for cactus pizza?

Isn’t it bad enough that I should risk having my head blown off by a light sprinkling of jalapenos to want to turn my tongue into a pin cushion with a portion of cactus added?

That said, it is a great pizza parlour. You can even order gluten- free pizzas, a definite sign that ‘Mamma’ cares what her customers want. I always find everything reasonably priced and I quite like the atmosphere of the place. The pizzas are delicious, the service is friendly and it is centrally located within easy reach of Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
